Should You Ever Work for Free?
Freelancers and other Professionals Working for FREE is a very controversial and very sensitive subject. But the thing most people get wrong when discussing it is CONTEXT. There are rare absolute answers to anything.
When hiring a graphic designer or any other type of freelancer many clients don't know what to do. How to hire a freelancer and build a mutually beneficial relationship, probably wasn't at the top of the list of things to do when starting a business. But the work still needs to get done.
Educating your clients is the important thing, and you can do this both firmly and respectfully.
Also consider the fact there are scenarios where it may be appropriate or even beneficial for you to work for free as a freelancer. Maybe you need access to a higher level of clients but don't have those relationships. Getting someone to take a chance on you can be difficult, this could be a way to make that happen.

There are times where working for free can give you leverage to say NO or to do exactly what you want, or build a relationship.
There are times where someone is asking for you to do free work to take advantage of you.
There are situations where you need to test your skills and experiment so you have the confidence to ask to be paid in important opportunities or situations later. Doing the work for free means that if you screw up or are learning that expectations are low and you're not on the hook for something major.
