Do you even need to link build? Yes and no. Mostly yes. You can totally create content that targets the right keyword and phrases that ranks in Google naturally over time.
It really depends on your ability to find keywords and phrases as well as your ability to create high value content that is better than what is out there.
For the most part you'll need to do some sort of promotion to get the proverbial ball rolling as Google and YouTube don't inherently reward quality content.
What I've seen is that you'll need to do a bit of promotion, and Google trusts your site a bit, it will start to send even more traffic and to other pages.
This whole idea of "link building" though is the wrong mindset. You need to think about it like this: You have a great website that helps people, it's your responsibility to get people to know about it.
If you had the cure for cancer would you just sit around and wait for Google or YouTube to realize your awesomeness? No!
Take the same approach with your website.
