WordPress Theme Live Preview | WP Learning Lab

Using the Live Preview option before activating a WordPress theme is very easy and safe. The Live Preview option allows you to see how a theme may look once activated on your site but doesn't affect how your live website appears or functions while your are previewing.

To see a WordPress theme live preview log into your WordPress admin dashboard and then click on Appearance in the left side menu. On the next page you will see a tiled list of all the themes currently installed on your website.

The active theme is the one in the top left with the dark gray bar below it. When you hover over any of the themes in the tiled list you will see a WordPress Theme Details button. Click on that button to see more information about that each theme.

When you hover over a theme that is currently not the active theme you will see a blue "Activate" button and a "Live Preview" button appear in the bottom left of the theme tile.

Those buttons are pretty self-explanatory. Click on the Activate WordPress theme button to make that theme the active one. Be aware that simply activating a WordPress theme can potentially break your site or make your content display incorrectly. The best thing to do is have a WordPress testing or WordPress development environment where you can replicate your website and then test the new theme.

If you don't have access to a testing environment then check your Google Analytics to find the times of day when traffic is the lowest. Play around with your themes in the low traffic periods so as few people as possible are affected by any potential issues.

To help with this problem, the developers of WordPress created the WordPress Live Preview option where you can see how a theme will potentially look before you activate it. If you don't have a testing environment I suggest that you use the WordPress theme Live Preview feature for WordPress theme testing.

If you like how the WordPress live preview looks you can activate that them and you're ready to go.

That's really all there is to activating WordPress themes.
