In this tutorial you're going to learn how to implement Google Analytics event tracking using a simple WordPress plugin and the Universal Analytics.

Quick review: Event tracking is a feature in Google analytics that allows you to track visitor engagement with your website content. You can read more about it here: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/events

Some of things you can track are:

- User interaction
- Track visitor engagement
- Track website interaction
- Track downloads
- Track video plays
- Track image clicks
- Track scrolling and track scrolling distance
- and much more

This tracking isn't limited to just websites either. You can use these same concepts (but not the same plugin) to track interaction with Web Apps and Mobile Phone Apps.

So, lets get to it. To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New.

On the next page type "WP Google Analytics Events" into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left.

Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it's installed.

This will add a new link in the left hand admin navigation called WP GA Events. Click on that link to go into the options for the plugin. You will need to set a couple things.

1. The Google Analytics Identifier (your UA code)
2. Whether or not to embed the GA tracking code
3. Whether or not you're using the Universal Tracking Code.

Following that you can create both Click Tracking and Scroll Tracking using this plugin. In this video we only implement click tracking.

To do so, click on the "Click Tracking" tab and then enter a class or ID that matches the class or ID of the element you want to track clicks on.

Then add an Event Category, Event Action and Event Label for that interaction and click on Save Changes. The category, action and label are what will show up in the real-time reports in your Google Analytics Account.

I recommend that you test your implementation by click on the completed link and then logging into Google Analytics to see if the event is tracked. If not, double check your work and try again.
