If you have one or several WordPress websites, you must backup on a regular basis.

But do you know how to backup WordPress?

It's easy, and what we need to do is backup all the files on your web server, along with the WordPress database which contains your website content and settings.

I'll show you the two best ways that you can backup your website files:

#1) Use cPanel - Many hosts have cPanel to manage your web server, and you can view files and backup your site using the File Manager.

Just select all of the files within your WordPress directory, and click the "Compress" button to create a ZIP file on your web server. Once this backup ZIP file is created, you can select on the File Manager and click the "Download" button to copy to your PC or Mac.

#2) Use FTP Program - I love the simplicty of FTP, and my program of choice is FileZilla. Their client software is available for both PC and Mac. You can access your web server with FileZilla and easily drag-and-drop the contents of your WordPress site to any folder on your computer. Please note: this usually takes significantly longer in time using the FTP program because they show you the live status updates on the file transfers.

Once you have your files backed up, it's time to backup the WordPress database.

Go back to your cPanel dashboard and find the "phpMyAdmin" button. This is where you can access all of the databases stored on your web server.

WordPress is one database, so if you find several databases listed, then be sure to select the correct one (you can view all databases from the "MySQL Databases" button within cPanel).

From phpMyAdmin, go to the "Export" tab and select the "Quick" option. Only advanced users should click the "Custom" option.

Double check that the Format is SQL and then click the "Go" button to download a copy to your computer.

Since you want to backup the site every few weeks (or more if it's updated frequenty), it's useful to know a reliable plugin that allows you to automate this process.
