How to create an HTML meta refresh on your WordPress blog | WP Learning Lab

If you have limited access on your WordPress site or its server, but you need to create a redirect, an HTML meta refresh is often your only option. These redirects are not instantaneous, but they are effective.

Here's the code I use in the video:

(less-than symbol)meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0,url=http://google.com/" /(greater than symbol)

Make sure you replace the (less-than symbol) and (greater than symbol) with the actual symbols. YouTube won't allow those characters in the comments.

To make the meta refresh work all you have to do add the one line of code above to the header.php file of your WordPress site.

(A little known fact is that you can also add this code to the body of a post as long as you input it using the HTML editor).

There are multiple ways to access the header.php file. One of the easiest is from the WordPress dashboard. Simple go to the Appearance menu, then click on the Editor.

From there click on header.php from the file list on the right side. This will open in the editor and you can add the meta refresh code.

You can also access the header.php file via FTP and the File Manager in cPanel.

If you use either of those methods you'll have to open the wp-content folder, then open the folder of your active theme (or child theme) and find the header.php in there.

Meta Refresh Settings

There are two settings you can change in the meta refresh code. First, the 0 can be replaced by any number you wish. That number will be the number of seconds the browser waits before it redirects the visitor to the destination page. Keep in mind that 0 is not really 0. 0 allows for a delay of about 1 second.

The destination page is the url that found after url= in the code. In the example it is http://google.com/

You can change that to another domain or even a different page within your website.

The meta refresh is a good way to create a redirect if you don't have access to the server or a plugin that allows you to create htaccess redirects.
