Kate Volman: Hey everyone I am Kate Volman and I am so excited to be joined by Chris Brogan. As the CEO of Owner Media Group Chris provides simple plans and projects to help businesses succeed. He is a sought-after public speaker and he is a New York Times bestselling author of 8 books and he's working on his ninth. I'm so excited to talk to you Chris.

Chris Brogan: Kate I am thrilled to be here. Thanks for having me on.

KV: So Chris I've been following you online for years and I actually had an opportunity to interview you when your book, The Freaks Shall Inherit The Earth, came out. And then I got to meet you in person at Inbound last year which is really fun. You have this really awesome….you've created this really unique voice. You're one of the most authentic marketers and entrepreneurs online today. I feel like you really speak to your audience, and for so many companies that are looking to kind of generate more traffic and they're all over online and they think they have this like whole world of internet and online marketing how, how do you do that?
And how have you been able to really create this great way to communicate with exactly your target market?

CB: So let's start with language because one of the things that I do a lot different than other people is I never think of them as my audience — I think of them as a community that I serve, so that right there changes the dynamic, because if I think of them as the community I serve. My job is to be helpful to them, not be like, “hey look at me, look at me.” … The other is that I never think of it as sort of a “target audience.” I think it as talking to one person — and I'm just really good at doing that to a hundred thousand or more at a time. And the reason that I go for that is that I stole this; Tony Kahn, who is a local Boston area public guy, radio guy, said that when he recorded interviews and what not, the official Tony Kahn sound was that he was talking to someone that he loved dearly, maybe over coffee or something, and he was trying to explain something to them that he thought was really important and that might help them. And so that's
always been in my mind ever since that day where I thought, “OK, well that's how I'll talk to people.” And that's another thing that a lot of my colleagues don't do a lot of times. They talk a lot more in, you know pizzazz and we can generate traffic and unlimited success!” And that's not how people talk. When you meet me at, anywhere, you know I come out of a bathroom and someone says, “hey Chris!” you know, “Thank God I washed my hands” was the first thought I had. The second is you know you're going to get the same guy you get on stage, only a little quieter, so that's key, something that anyone could do. And the phrase “authentic” usually kind of weirds me out because it's one of those words you can't use on yourself ... I guess when people say to me, “how do you be authentic?” I say, “why don't you just do the thing that you really feel and why don't you really say the things that you really feel, and maybe that'll get you closer to the kind of people you're trying to serve. So the people I reach are people who find something that resonates and then they go, “aha. Well if that weirdo could do it maybe I could do it.” And that's usually how I connect to people.

KV: That is awesome. I've told you this before, with your emails that you send, I look forward to
getting your email on Sunday morning. I'm like, “oh what's Chris gonna say, and what is he working on that is totally speaking to me.” And I just so appreciate that and I think a lot more companies are trying to go that route and they just haven't been able to accomplish it with all this content. I love that you you really do interact with your community. Every single time I've sent you an email, I get one back within minutes. You really like to ask them questions; I know you do surveys and stuff, and that really kind of fuels some of the stuff that you're working on. So talk about how businesses can potentially reach out to their community that they already have and and get better at connecting with them?

CB: It's a great question. The thing that I'd tend to like to say to people is that if you can really do stuff to keep showing the community that you serve that you're there for them and that you're trying to really respond to them, you stand out almost immediately. …
