Famous Cheap and Free Logo Designs [Rant] http://youtu.be/jH93yE8QhS4 Famous Logo Design work for high profile companies that was either cheap or free, including: Twitter Logo, Nike Logo, Google Logo and Coca Cola Logo.
When attempting to devalue Graphic Designers and what they charge for Logo Design work, many people want to throw "facts" in their face, such as all these Big companies that used "free" or "cheap" logo design to justify the way they disrespect Graphic Designers and their pricing.
In today's RANT I'm going to dispel those "myths" and tell you the story behind those Logos and create CONTEXT for why they cost what they cost.
One those Designers can tell a story about that famous brand they did work for. A small business owner can offer you that so they can use that as leverage in price negotiations. They level of exposure they can offer is not valuable enough in most cases.
Twitter couldn't actually use what they purchased as a Logo and when they realized this they had an In-house Designer Redesign a Logo based on the concept, what they purchased was "artwork" from an illustartor rather than a Logo from a Designer.

Nike- the Nike logo was commissioned by Phil Knightly co-founder back in 1971 while he was a professor at a university to a Graphic Design Student for $35 which adjusted for inflation today would be $217. Added to that a few years later Designer Carolyn Davidson was given a gift of a Diamond Ring with the Nike Logo she designed and 500 shares ($600,000.00 value) of Nike stock.... so NO the Nike Logo did not cost $35 by any stretch of the imagination....

Google- The first Google Logo was create in GIMP by a Co-Founder of Google. If you make something yourself, with free software of course it cost you $0 all of my stuff cost me $0 to design too...
Coca Cola- in 1885 the logo was designed by the bookeeper/accountant of what was then the Pemberton Chemical Company, Frank Robinson who also by the way came up with the name Coca Cola! He went on to become one of the marketers for the company and eventually one of it's directors. When a friend or employee does something it can cost you $0. But it actually cost whatever his salary was and then we'd have to adjust it for inflation.

SO with the exception of Google, which was a DIY project, none of these logos was "cheap" or "free" at all in the grand scheme of things. That is what "context" and FACTS bring to a story. The myth of BIG COMPANIES WITH FREE LOGOS is just that... a myth, unless you made it yourself. When an employee does it, it cost your salary, and referencing old work before the industry really found it's legs and people knew what things were worth and not even adjusting for inflation makes your argument irrelevant in the first place.
Don't haggle with designers, when they ask for something you can either afford it and are willing to pay it, or you aren't, don't tell them "it's not worth it".
