If you want to be successful as a Creative Professional, you need to learn from someone who is already successful as a creative professional. Your parents are not an authority on the marketplace and what a viable career something is or is not, they don't know because they are not in the marketplace (unless they are).

Someone who isn't working, competing or hiring in the Creative Services Industry can't judge it and say whether there is any money in it or not. That's just not real. As for your teachers and professors, they don't know how people hire, because they are not hiring.

This isn't to discount them or their view entirely, its to encourage you to seek out information from the source, directly.

HOW TO GET HIRED AS A CREATIVE
Being hired as a creative is going to come down to work and network. Anyone tell you it's just down to your portfolio doesn't know what they are talking about. It will come down to who you do or don't have access to and who values that work and at what price. You can't sell to someone who isn't buying. Build a portfolio of work that people who you want to work for will buy into, even if it means working for free. I did 1000 free YouTube videos and can get jobs producing and editing content for thousands of dollars as a result. You may not feel great about it, you will take criticism for it but it is literally the way you build a network and referrals.

HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL DESIGNER
If you want to be successful as a graphic designer, you need to spend everyday, for the next year producing a quality piece of design work. If you are not good enough or fast enough to complete a worthwhile piece of client work in a day, you will not make it in the real world. You need that level of speed and decisiveness, especially at an agency.

If you want to get design clients, search Instagram and twitter for local businesses, look at the ads and website and if sucks, reach out and offer to fix it, if it is good, move on.

HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL PHOTOGRAPHER
If you want to be a successful photographer, shoot the equivalent of 3 rolls of film every single day for a year and edit and post 100 of your best shots every single month for a year. You will have 1000 pieces of quality work to pitch yourself. If you don't have subjects or clients, work for free until you do. Find local businesses that are paying for online ads in Google and Facebook and pitch them your services because you know they have the money. Yes, I've made money as a photographer.

HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL WRITER
IF you want to be a successful writer, pick a few topics you feel comfortable writing about. Publish on your blog or on Medium.com everyday for a year. Volunteer to write on blogs and sites you follow for free. Pitch yourself to a few paid ghostwriting services. Identify paid writers and then look up who they write for. Build a network of subject matter experts to interview so you have some good interview candidates to use as leverage.

HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST
If you want to be successful as an artist, create a piece of art everyday for a year. Nope not kidding. Then identify major publications and brands that use that kind of artwork. Pitch them till you get a yes. In the meantime, find online template shops and sell some digital downloads that you can part with. IN the meantime stream creating art on YouTube and get ad revenue and exposure and build a brand.
