H1 Tag SEO - There Should Only Be One H1 Tag Per Page

When it comes to SEO 3 of the most important on-page SEO factors are the URL slug, the page title and the content of the H1 tag.

There should only be one of each of those on the page.

Note: The need to have one H1 tag on the page was never driving by search engines, it was due to the the HTML4 standard, which only allowed one H1. With the creation of HTML5 you can have multiple H1 tags on a single page. But, I still only recommend on H1 for the sake of ease and clarity. And because A LOT of WordPress themes are still coded in HTML4.

When you are creating a page or post in WordPress you will fill in the "Title" field with the title of your post. For most WordPress themes the content in that field will become the content for the Title tag and the H1 tag on the page. Which is ok, but not ideal.

The ideal is to create the title and the H1 separately so that you won't be in danger of keyword stuffing and you can use more LSI (related) long-tail keywords.

Some WordPress themes that I've encountered are coded in HTML4, but the developer, who doesn't understand SEO, include two H1 tags in the page templates. This is damaging the SEO power of those sites.

To check if you have multiple H1 tags simply open a page on your site in your browser (not the WordPress editor version of the page, but the live page a visitor would see). Then right-click on the page and click "View Page Source" in the context menu that opens.

You'll be presented with the source code of the page. Hold Control on your keyboard and type the letter F (Command and F on a Mac). That will open the browser's search feature.

Search for h1. If everything is coded well you will see only one result. If there are multiple results (ie. multiple H1 tags) then you'll need to take steps.

The first option is to create a child theme and change the theme templates if you know how.

The second option is the contact the theme developer and ask them to fix the problem.

The third option is to pick a different theme.
