Method #1 Using Cloudflare:
Get a Free Cloudflare Account - 0:18

We’ll be using Free SSL certificates that are provided by Lets Encrypt & Cloudflare. Since they’re available for everyone to use free of charge web hosting companies usually try to sell you these. But they’re not actually charging for the SSL certificate itself. They charge you for the installation fee & renewals.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to perform the installation process of a free SSL yourself. So, you won’t need to rely on your web hosting providers to do this for you. All of this requires no coding or fiddling with advanced topics. So, even if you’re a complete beginner I believe you can do it!

Method 1 - Cloudflare

Cloudflare provides free SSL certificates to all of their users. They also make sure your website loads faster internationally. So, you should be using Cloudflare even if you do have an SSL installed.

Here’s how to get a free SSL from Cloudflare:
1. Register on Cloudflare.com
2. Choose the free plan and enter the domain name of a website that doesn’t already have an SSL installed.
3. Update the nameservers of your domain provider so they’re pointing to the Cloudflare servers.
4. Within Cloudflare navigate to the SSL/TLS tab and choose the “Flexible” option.
5. Then click “Edge Certificates” and activate the “Always Use HTTPS” option.
6. If your website is hosted on WordPress log into your WordPress control panel and install the “Cloudflare Flexible SSL” & “Really Simple SSL” plugins.

That’s it now your website will have a free SSL Certificate activated! But what if you don’t know how to update your nameservers or you don’t have access to them? Well here’s a 2nd method of getting a free SSL certificate using cPanel (you only need access to the File Manager).

Method 2 - sslforfree.com & cPanel

Go to sslforfree.com and type in the domain name that doesn’t have an SSL installed.
Click on “Create Free SSL Certificate” & choose “Manual Verification”
Download the 2 files that are named Download File #1 and Download File #2
Now, you’ll need to log into the control panel of your web hosting provider and access the File Manager.
Once inside the File Manager navigate to the folder where all of the WordPress files are located (it will have a lot of folders beginning with wp)
You should see a folder named .well-known (if you don’t see it. Inside your file manager click on “Settings” and check the box “Show Hidden Files”). If you still don’t see the folder just create one yourself name it “.well-known” (with the dot)
Inside .well-known you should see a folder named acme-challenge. Again, if it’s not there just create one yourself.
Upload the 2 files that you’ve downloaded previously.
Open the sslforfree window and try clicking the links that are provided. They should open up a new window where you’ll see a single line of text.
Now click on “Download SSL Certificate” and you’ll be presented with 3 columns of random symbols. Keep this open
Go to your web hosting provider and log into the control panel. Then navigate to a section called SSL/TLS. Click on it, then click “Manage SSL Sites”
Scroll down a bit and in the drop box menu choose the domain you’ll be activating the SSL for.
Copy-paste all of the information from sslforfree.com to the boxes in your control panel and click “Install Certificate”
The last thing you’ll want to do is go into your WordPress dashboard and install a plugin called “Really Simple SSL” then activate it and activate your free SSL certificate.

If the hosting provider you’re using has auto renewal functionality built into the cPanel you won’t need to update your SSL certificate. Otherwise, you’ll need to do this once every 90 days.
