Shawn Pfunder of GoDaddy interviews Marlon, inventor of the interchangeable three piece bow-tie, the Tri-Bow-Tie. Marlon discusses the struggles of starting a small business and how he has persevered.

Shawn: Hey everybody, I'm Shawn [assumed spelling]. I'm hanging out here with Marlon.

Marlon: Yeah yeah yeah.

Shawn: Yeah and the Tri Bow Tie.

Marlon: That's right.

Shawn: Which is totally cool and I don't understand it at all even though it looks awesome. So I'm going to ask him about it. Hey, how does it even work?

Marlon: So basically-- you want to see how it works?

Shawn: Yeah, totally want to see.

Marlon: So basically what you do, you unsnap the center strap and then you unhook the left and right wing and you can interchange all of your bow ties. Makes you the designer.

Shawn: Right, so you can do like one side and the other like totally different.

Marlon: Totally. All three sides different.

Shawn: Okay so putting it on, does this help you put it on in some way or do you just like, you just snap it a little bit in the back and put it on?

Marlon: You make your tie, then you put it on. That's what you do.

Shawn: Okay the coolest thing about this tri-bow tie or bow tie in general is that it actually looks re- you're wearing one right now.

Marlon: I'm actually wearing one.

Shawn: All right so this looks like a real bow tie. Not any of these clip-on fancy stuff like--

Marlon: That's right.

Shawn: it's got the stuff coming through. Where in the world did you come up with this idea?

Marlon: You know it actually started back in 2008.

Shawn: Yeah.

Marlon: I was at a juvenile detention facility working there, and one of the kids came up to me and was like Mr. Marlon, can I wear your bow tie to court? If I do the judge will let me go. I said, sure, no problem. So I tied it for him, we went to court. Long story short, judge saw him, let him go.

Shawn: No way!

Marlon: And he looked at me as if the tie set him free. So I was like-- wow. So I thought from that day forward I needed to do something with bow ties.

Shawn: So what did the first like, what did the first bow ties look like? Is this a--

Marlon: Oh my God, the first bow ties were-- they were probably bigger, bigger than me. My grandmother made them and they were huge. They were like clown bow ties. [laughs] You know we kept going and finally perfected it. It k about two years to make.

Shawn: Oh, two years for you to perfect that.

Marlon: That's right.

Shawn: And so your grandmother made the bow ties?

Marlon: Grandmother. Yes.

Shawn: Your grandmother sewed the bow ties. Does she still sew the bow ties?

Marlon: She does. She does.

Shawn: That is amazing.

Marlon: She does. But we're moving to manufacturing so she can get a rest, you know?

Shawn: Okay so tell me a little bit more about that. Like where are you at right now in your business?

Marlon: So right now they're being manufactured. They're almost done manufacturing. And we're, right now we're just ready to get everything out. I mean we

put it out there with social media. Everybody's inquiring like where do I get these bow ties?

Shawn: Yeah.

Marlon: And so that's where we're at right now. We're just ready to launch these things.

Shawn: Yeah it's attention getting, man.

Marlon: Yeah.

Shawn: Like it's like, well just seeing somebody in a bow tie is attention getting right?

Marlon: Yeah. Yeah.

Shawn: And they can use those going forward. So a little bit, [inaudible] a little bit more about marketing. What has worked for you and where have you struggled when it comes to marketing your, the tri-bow tie?

Marlon: What's worked I would say just showing somebody, actually getting it to them.

Shawn: Yeah.

Marlon: Describing it to them is kind of hard, but when they see it--

Shawn: Yeah.

Marlon: on social media-- I created like some funny videos, you know? And so that actually brings a lot of awareness of them. Now struggling, I would say the most part is just staying motivated.

Shawn: Yeah.

Marlon: It's hard when, you know, you're trying to raise funds and you're trying to, you know me and my wife have five kids, all six years old and under, you know at the same time trying to change a diaper while changing bow s. It's hard you know. [laughs] But just that resilience just to keep going, you know, that's what's kept me going.

Shawn: Yeah well okay so I can tell by the way you did this holding a mic that you've got this down with one hand.

Shawn: So I'm not sure if you've got the changing the diaper down with one hand as well.

Marlon: Oh yeah yeah.

Shawn: Okay [inaudible].

Marlon: Yeah, one hand and one leg.

Shawn: Hop on up here. Daddy's working on his bow ties right now. I totally love it. Well I mean listen, one of the best things you've already mentioned, getting on social media, getting that out there. Doing funny videos.
