Limit Login Attempts Unblock - Use FTP To Unlock Your Login | WP Learning Lab

The Limit Login Attempts plugin is used to limit the number of times someone using the same IP can try logging into your WordPress site with the incorrect username and password. This is used to fight Brute Force Login Attacks where a hacker tries to guess your username and password using automated software.

This plugin does a great service to webmasters (see more information here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/limit-login-attempts/). But it can also be pain in the neck if you don't remember your own username and password because you can easily lock yourself out of your website. At that point you have two options.

You can either wait until your lock is lifted or you can unlock your admin account via FTP (which is a temporary fix) or via MySQL (which is a permanent fix). This tutorial will show you how to do it via FTP.

The first thing you have to do is open your FTP client (I use one called Transmit for Mac and Filezilla for Windows) and connect to your website's server (I'm connecting to BlueHost in this tutorial). Then open your website's root folder (this is where the wp-config.php file usually is. Once there open the wp-content folder and then open the Plugins folder.

Inside the plugins folder you will see a folder called "limit-login-attempts". Change the name of the folder. I like to simply add a dash to the end of folder name "limit-login-attempts-". This will deactivate the Limit Login Attempts plugin and lift all login blocks (not just yours).

Now you can log into your site and do what you needed to do. Once you've done what you needed to do make sure you change the folder name back to "limit-login-attempts". Then go to the Plugins panel inside your WordPress admin and re-activate the Limit Login Attempts plugin.

If your login block is still active you will be kicked out of the Admin area until your block is lifted. That's why this is a temporary fix. If you unblock your account via MySQL (link to tutorial video: https://youtu.be/r70hPajyVhQ) then you block is cleared until you lock yourself out again.
