WordPress Pages vs. Posts - 5 Main Differences & When to Use Which One

For WordPress beginners the difference between WordPress pages and WordPress posts isn't immediately clear. Even less clear is when to use which one. In the video above and in the text below I explain the differences between the two.

WordPress Pages vs Posts Point #1: Amount

The biggest difference is that for most websites pages are meant to be few in number. Pages usually include your About page, your Contact Us page, your Services page and often your Home page.

Posts on the other hand are part of the blog and on an active blog there are way more posts than pages.

WordPress Posts vs Pages Point #2: Ordering

By default, WordPress posts are listed in reverse chronological order on the blog home page or on the posts page In contrast, pages are static and are not listed by date.

WordPress Pages versus Posts Point #3: Location

Posts can be found in archives, categories, recent posts and other widgets. Pages are NOT found in archives, categories, recent posts and other widgets. This is true by default. However, you can find plugins that allow pages to be assigned categories and tags.

WordPress Posts versus Pages Point #4: RSS

Post are displayed in the RSS feed of your blog. Pages are NOT displayed in the RSS feed of your blog. RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication and it allows people to use programs called RSS Readers to see all the latest updates on your website without actually visiting your website.

Pages versus Posts #5: Categories and Tags

Posts use categories and tags. Pages do NOT use categories nor tags. As mentioned above there are plugins that allow pages to use categories and tags.
