Setting Name Servers In Your Domain Registrar Account | WP Learning Lab

A very important step in setting up your self-hosted WordPress site is setting name servers. What does this actually do?

There is something called Domain Name System (DNS for short) which used in part to manage internet traffic. The domain name server is where the DNS sends traffic. If you buy a domain name with GoDaddy, by default traffic will be sent to GoDaddy. This is great if you have a hosting account with GoDaddy.

I on the other had have hosting accounts with BlueHost and HostGator. You have a hosting account with them or another business. In order for your new domain name (in GoDaddy) to connect with your hosting account (where your website lives) you have set the name servers appropriately.

When you bought your hosting account the host will have sent you their name servers. For example, the BlueHost name servers for shared hosting accounts are always ns1.bluehost.com and ns2.bluehost.com. Those two name servers will need to be put into the DNS settings of your domain inside your domain name registrar.

That's enough of the back story, now let's actually do it.

To do this log into the Domain Name Registrar where your purchased the domain name. In the video above I'm working with GoDaddy.

Once logged in find the section where all your domain names are listed. In GoDaddy, you then check the box beside the domain and the Name Servers button in the menu bar becomes active. Click on it.

This will open a window where you select the Custom option for your name servers. This will generate another popup window. Enter the name servers that your hosting account sent you into the fields that are presented and click OK. Then click Save.

Your name servers are now set. It can take up to 72 hours for the change to take affect. Once it has taken affect you can create an Addon domain in your hosting account which is the next step. This video shows you how: https://youtu.be/vOjKns89Rj0
