WordPress XML Export/Import File - How Does This File Work? | WP Learning Lab

In this tutorial we open the WordPress export/import XML file so that you can see what is in the file and how you can make changes to it as needed.

XML is designed to be human and computer readable. This means when you open the file you will be able to piece together what it means even if you don't know XML.

Some of the most important XML Tags you'll encounter in this file are:

1. item & /item - each individual blog post or page is an item
2. title & /title - this is the title of the blog post or page
3. link & /link - this is the permalink
4. pubDate & /pubDate - this is the publication date
5. dc:creator & /dc:creator - this is the author of the blog post or page
6. description & /description - this is the description
7. content & /content - the is the main content of the post or page
8. excerpt & /excerpt - this is the excerpt
9. wp:post_id37/wp:post_id - this is the post ID
10. wp:comment_status & /wp:comment_status - this determines whether comments are open or closed
11. wp:ping_statusopen/wp:ping_status - this determines whether pingbacks are allowed or not
12. wp:post_name & /wp:post_name - this is the name of the post
13. wp:status & /wp:status - this determines the post status: draft, scheduled or published
14. wp:post_parent & /wp:post_parent - this determines that parent of the post
15. wp:menu_order & /wp:menu_order - this determines the post or page's order in the menu system
16. wp:post_type & /wp:post_type - this determines the post type: page or post
17. wp:post_password & /wp:post_password - this determines the password to view the post
18. wp:is_sticky & /wp:is_sticky - this determines whether the post is stick or not

When you export from WordPress all of the pages and posts will be included. You then have the power to open the XML file a text editor and edit it to include on the pages and posts that you want to import to the other site.
