Taking the leap into a new tech-based career can be simultaneously exhilarating and intimidating, whether you’re a new college grad or making a mid-life career transition. No matter how you got there, what your qualifications may be, or how long you’ve been doing what you do, as someone in tech you might at some time experience doubt, feelings of inadequacy, or worry that you’re just not “good enough.”

Thankfully, mentoring works for everyone, but women in tech can particularly benefit from mentoring as a means to build confidence, enhance skills, and set achievable career goals. It’s no secret that women in tech are underrepresented and oftentimes underpaid. Although women have come far politically, socially, economically and professionally, the glass ceiling is still very much in place. It’s clear that women are catching on to the idea that when we help each other, we all succeed.

How mentoring can be used as a powerful tool for women?

Insights into company dynamics
First, mentorship within a company provides insider knowledge into how the company functions and the skills that one needs to get ahead. A mentor provides invaluable insights from their own experience for the benefit of the mentee, helping to avoid mistakes and hone skills that will make you stand out.

Woman-to-woman mentoring is the most powerful tool
Although mentorship should be welcomed from any gender, there is an argument to be made for woman-to-woman mentorship. Women have specific workplace struggles that others cannot relate to, and often do not see. Having a mentor that has been through similar struggles is a powerful thing.

There’s value in being mentored in general
While female leaders can offer insight into being a successful woman in the tech arena, you can learn from anyone. In many areas of the tech industry, men still dominate and are the ones in the best position to effect change. Traditionally, they have more experience and more exposure to the inner workings of the field, just by virtue of being in the majority.

Mentorship is also a two-way street
When we mentor others, we’re also honing our own skills and building up the confidence that we can lead.

Mentorship in tech fosters more than technical skills:

-Communication
Practicing clear, effective communication is possible with someone ready and willing to give feedback.

-Leadership
Aspiring leaders succeed when they can interact with others already in leadership positions.

-Adaptation to a new environment
Having a mentor — especially when joining a new company or department — allows you to acclimate to the culture more quickly.

-Networking
A mentor can offer opportunities to expand the mentee’s network of personal and professional contacts through invitations, introductions and suggested organizations to join.

As someone in tech, how can you make the most of mentoring opportunities?

Be strategic, know what you’d like to learn from your mentor and make sure they are aware of it. Don’t assume mentors will find you. Take action that will have others see you as someone worth mentoring: ask for more challenging assignments, speak up with good ideas, get seen.

Be willing to admit that you don’t know everything and want to learn more. Ask questions, solicit feedback, and be ready to embrace the idea of making changes. Give your mentor permission to provide negative feedback by asking “what can I do to improve?” or “what am I lacking?” Take your mentor’s advice seriously, continually work on development, check infrequently, and don’t leave anything to chance. Be intentional and consistently work to make progress.

It’s a fact, diverse teams perform and innovate better. The data consistently supports it. So who needs to be proactive about promoting diversity? It’s all of us. Fair and even representation won’t happen overnight. Within our evolving culture, women & allies play a critical role in enabling the change. How? Through awareness, knowledge, skills, and action.

Let’s start making the changes we can control, in our own careers, to include more women in tech and set the stage for a future generation where genders are more equally represented.
