The inbuilt functions of WordPress are meant to be progressive, in the sense that they’re ideally suited towards those who build up their blog slowly over time. Bulk transfers from one domain to another or from one blog to another usually require a workaround or some specialized tools.

For example, the inbuilt export function generates an XML file without transferring over any media. It only preserves the links. This poses a problem for those wishing to migrate all of their images from one blog to another.

Due to the way the upload process is structured in WordPress, each image is added one at a time – much like FTP. This means that if you have a large blog consisting of hundreds or even thousands of pictures, the process can be extremely painful and time-consuming. What we want is a way to quickly add a zip file containing a large number of images using a simple transfer within a zip archive.

Unfortunately, the WordPress media uploader doesn’t accept zip files and even if it did, it wouldn’t know what to do with them. So it’s a good thing we have a plug-in that attempts to replace the inbuilt media manager and doubles up as a gallery tool.

It’s called NextGEN Gallery and while it doesn’t replace the traditional media library, it acts as a good substitute especially if you want to display a lot of pictures within a single post.
Creating the Zip Archive

For purposes of this test, I’ve taken four images and created a zip archive on my desktop. As you can see in the screenshot below, a file with the extension “.zip” contains my media.

Install the NextGEN Gallery plugin and after activation, select the “Add Gallery/Images” submenu item under Gallery on the left-hand side towards the bottom of the WordPress administration dashboard.

This will bring up the interface allowing you to create a new gallery of images. Enter a name for it (in this case I’ve called it “zipped files”), and after selecting the zip archive by clicking the “Add Files” button, I click the one called “Start Upload”.

So instead of manually adding each and every picture one after the other, I allow all of them to be uploaded at once without a break. For these four files it might not make much of a difference, but when you’re dealing with dozens of them, the gap between the two processes is enormous.

The screenshot above shows you the notification the NextGEN plugin displays when the process is complete. You can see that it has accurately determined that I have four images in the zip archive.
