Create A Google Form

The first step to create a google form is to make sure you have a Google Drive account. If you don’t, go to drive.google.com to create one.

As with most Google products, it’s free.

Your Google Drive account will be associated with your Gmail account. If you do not have on of those either you’ll have to create one (also free).

Once you are in Google Drive, go to the “New” menu, scroll down to “More” and click “Google Forms.”

The great thing about these forms is you can add them your website instead of using the form builder options for your website, which can be very frustrating to use and don’t offer enough options.

There are quite a few question types in the form build and we are going to do a quick run-through of them all.

Short Answer

Short Answer questions are the simplest question type. They require a short written answer. There are several ways this can be customized.

Each question can be easily duplicated, deleted or made to be required. You can also add a description to your question.

Some questions also have response validation, which allows you to minimize or maximize the length, require an email, and many other options.

Using the validation options from the images below, we are ensuring that the number entered for the answer is the number 10.

Paragraph Answer

Next up we can add another type of question, like the paragraph answer. To add a new question simply click on the plus icon to the right of the form editor.

Paragraph answer has all the same options as short answer. The only difference it allows for larger amounts of text to answer the question.
Let’s take a quick pause from the question types and talk about some new options.

Now that we have more than one question another option options up. Google form questions are very easy to move around by clicking on the six dots, holding and dragging the question around the reorder.

It is also possible to customize the form so there are multiple question sections or question blocks. This will become separate pages when the form is published.

The sections you create can also be rearranged by dragging and dropping and linked to separately within the form.

It is best to add sections once you’ve created your whole form because you can then organize more effectively.

You can also add titles and descriptions for sections to create the visual feel of several questions being in different sections.

These sections can be set up so a user is automatically referred to a certain section based on their answer.

Multiple Choice Questions

Multiple choice questions come exactly as you would think they do, but there are extra customization options that allow you to add an image in the background as well as adding images for each option.
For some question types, including Multiple choice, is also the option to shuffle the option order if you want a level of randomness in your survey.

Checklist Questions

There are also checklist questions, which are similar multiple choice questions except you can select multiple options at the same time.
Similarly, drop down questions are like multiple choice except they take up a lot less space.

Upload Questions

There are file upload questions that upload files to the form owner’s Google Drive. The person uploading must sign in into their gmail account first. These questions allow you to specify the file type, file size, and number of files that a user can submit.

Linear Scale Questions

Linear scale questions let you choose a scale and label the two ends of the continuum so that a user can select a degree along it.

Multiple Choice Grid Questions

Multiple choice grid questions let you choose options for rows and columns.

Then the user must choose a column answer for each row. It is sort of like having a linear scale over numerous rows.

As you would expect these can be customized so that you can specify the number of answers that are allowed per row.
