How To Check The Google Search Results For Potential WordPress SEO Issues | WP Learning Lab

A lot of SEO is running SEO campaigns, analyzing results and figuring out why something went well so you can repeat it or troubleshooting why it didn't work so you don't repeat it.

But, before you even run an SEO campaign, you have to make sure your site is set up properly.

Over the years many clients have come to us for help with their SEO. Often we find that one or more things on their WordPress site aren't done right and are hurting their SEO.

One of the ways to troubleshoot issues like this is Google Search Results or Google Search Results Pages (SERPs for short).

All you have to do is go to Google and type in site: (that's the word site and then a colon) followed by your domain name with out any spaces.

For examples, searching for my domain I would type in site:wplearninglab.com.

This will show all of the pages on my domain that Google has in the index.

The pages Google returns for you is ALL the pages they have indexed, not just the ones that are ranking well.

What you are looking for is large deviations in the number of pages in the index from what you would expect.

For example, if you know your site has a combined 100 posts and pages but Google is only showing 15 of them in the index, there's something wrong.

On the other hand, if you know your site has a combined 100 posts and pages, but there are thousands of pages from you site in the index you also have a problem.

In regards to how many pages Google should have indexed for you, a good rule of thumb is 60-90% of the posts and pages you have. So if you have 100 posts and pages then 60 to 90 of them should be in the index.

Anything far outside that range points to a potential problem.

Having too few pages in the index implies that there is something going on that is preventing Google from indexing your site.

If you have too many pages then there is chance that you have a plugin that is generating large numbers of unwanted pages.

Both scenarios are harmful to your SEO.
