As the Senior Executive of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at nFormation, Deepa Purushothaman knows firsthand what it means to negotiate as a woman of color. Whether you’re a minority woman business owner or employee, Deepa wants to help reframe what it means (and looks like) to negotiate. If asked the right way, negotiation can be used as a tool that benefits everyone and allows women of color to step into their power in the workplace. From a “yes but” strategy to a “yes and” strategy approach, knowing what you want and the “why” behind it will help you spend your energy wisely. Negotiations aren’t always transactional, either. Asking for what you want and setting audacious goals will set the stage for long-term success as a minority businesswoman. Because men are four times more likely to initiate negotiations, Deepa encourages women of color to practice with small asks first to become more comfortable to make those big, bold asks later.
