Kari Leigh Marucchi: My name is Kari Leigh Marucchi, and I shoot WordCamps. This is my 16th.
GoDaddy: 16?
KM: This is my 32nd WordCamp, and it's my 16th WordCamp that I've shot comprehensively.
GD: Oh, wow.
KM: I’m running what I call the "WP Photo Project," and yes a large part of it is me going to camps and shooting them myself. That's not the whole point, I'm one person I can't go to every camp, and I cannot shoot a whole camp although I try. I like that, I like trying … It's important I think that all the people who are interested in taking a camera to WordCamps have a structured program where they know where they can contribute their photos to one place eventually — one centralized repository and archive of WordCamp culture stock photography.
GD: Yeah.
KM: That's my dream.
GD: Yeah.
KM: And there's different expressions of that right now. Different camps will publish a collection of photos somewhere, maybe on the camp's site or on a Flickr, and when I saw WordCamp Europe doing that last year, I thought OK great I want to do that with every camp that I go to and the more volunteer time I have even if i don't go to a camp, I'll find out if photographers there want to contribute to these Flickr accounts. That's why I'm saving all the photography since I started and eventually pull in one space and then eventually maybe you keep crawling back into the past all the way to the beginning of the first WordCamps. I think it's exciting!
GD: Why photography? For you, not for WordCamp necessarily.
KM: A woman came up to me at WordCamp Minneapolis, and she said, “I love that you have found your passion. Like, I see it, I see it in your eyes. I love watching what you do and I want that for myself. I'm not a photographer, but I just want that feeling.” And and she says, “So how did you find what it is that you love to do. How do I do that?” And then I said, “Let me go away for a day, and I'll see you tomorrow. I'm just gonna think about it.” And looking back, and waking up the next morning I realized whatever that thing is that you do — that's what you enjoy, yes, but that also people tend to say, "I like that you did that. I like what you did!” And sometimes, you'll hear that you know maybe you did a backflip into the pool, and they're like "that was awesome," but are you doing that as a lifestyle if you're doing something more where you can continue to get good feedback, look at that. Whatever that is. And maybe that's not something that conventionally makes money; I mean yes you can be a photographer you can make a career out of that, but that's tough with the digital age more photographers, and we've got a niche, and the competition and the equipment … If you keep getting that feedback keep realizing that that's what you enjoy doing more than anything, maybe there's something unique about you and what you want to shoot. That's how it's happened for me. And I said that to her, I found that I love shooting smart people who love to give of themselves. It's this weird niche, I'm not …
GD: I love shooting nerds, is that what you just said?
KM: I make geeks look really good because they are and I see that, and when I see a person engaging and sharing or speaking and I see that spirit, my brain starts framing and lighting and that computation goes off in my head, and that is the most fun. I offered to her, I said, “figure out what that is. Figure out what you like to do … that people give good feedback about, package that.” And I have. And I don't know how sustainably marketable me shooting geeks speaking and hanging out at WordCamps is, but I package it and I am marketing and we will see.
GD: So, turning it into a business, what excites you about it and what stresses you out?
What excites me about it is that I believe wholeheartedly in the value of the WordPress projects and the WordPress community. I think that what I do and what I want to do and how I want a team of photographers I think that's a great value to the health, the bonding, the well-being of the WordPress community and you know to have documented this culture that we've created together over the last decade plus … I believe, and I keep getting that good feedback all the time, that yes that's value. That excites me that I enjoy and that people are giving feedback like it. Yeah they are excited about it.
GD: So it sounds like, before we get into the stress out part, no it sounds like community or I guess it's interesting I think a lot of freelancers struggle with finding a focus …
KM: Yes.
