Marinus Klasen: Marinus Klasen is the name. My company name is very simple. It is M. Klasen. Yeah, I just work with that. A while ago I first went with a Dutch name, Blauw Blad. It's "blue leaf," but then in Dutch. It was in my student time. But then I figured I want to change it all after I graduated, so I just went for the personal name. I wanted more personal. So I went with that and it works out fine.
GoDaddy: We were talking earlier … You've been building websites since you were 14?
MK: Yeah. I had a skateboarding club and so we started with the skateboarding and a few other guys or publishing videos.
GD: Yeah.
MK: Also creating websites. It was in FrontPage back then, a long, long time ago. So I was inspired by those people and I started building websites myself, too. Trying to get something going, working in tables … It was a fun time, actually I tried to publish the videos that was a whole a very different way than we do nowadays.
GD: Did you make money when you were that young?
MK: Not at that time. I think when I turned around 16, something like that. A restaurant asked me to build their website, and I remember I was really glad to do it for 50 euros. It was crazy, but I made my first 50 euros myself and it was very hard — that was lovely.
GD: Yeah. That’s amazing.
MK: That was the first I did. I was proud of it. If I look back at the website right now, it doesn't even exist anymore.
GD: I always gonna say let's look right now and take a look at it. So, you went to university — after you got out …
MK: I never went to university.
GD: Oh, you didn't. So you've just been building websites since then?
MK: I did the four year. We call it "MBO" education in the Netherlands. The thing is, I did a lot of self-study.
GD: Yeah.
MK: The educations itself didn't really add value to my knowledge, but I wanted the paper to start working for a company. Although I already knew by then that I wanted to go my way, but still it's nice to have the paper at least. Most of knowledge I have is just by studying myself reading about it, Googling about it.
GD: Your development and design knowledge, is that the same? You've just done that on your own?
MK: Yeah. I’m mostly talking about that knowledge.
GD: That's amazing, that's really interesting to me. So is it mostly books or mostly just view source and picking it up from that?
MK: View source, Google.
GD: Google? Thank you, Google!
MK. Thank you, Google. You read a lot of Stack Overflow. Just trial and error. If it doesn't work, search. If it still doesn't work, search more. If it still doesn't work, take a break and search later.
GD: Go skateboarding?
MK: Yeah, go skateboarding … That's a long time ago.
GD: Do you skateboard now?
MK: Not anymore. I'd love to start skateboarding, to do something because I need to work on that, too.
GD: You can get a longboard, like for cruising, right?
MK: Yeah, I was thinking about it, but here in Vienna, the steps, the scooters … People using the scooters for transportation. I might do that in Lisbon.
GD: Is there anything that stresses you out about being a freelancer?
MK: Not directly, but of course when you go live with a website to production
GD: Oh, yeah.
MK: It's a bit scary for a bit always the next days. My advice is to launch on Monday, not on Friday because then your weekend could be ruined.
GD: Yeah.
MK: But not directly actually.
GD: You love it?
MK: I love to be my own boss.
GD: Yeah.
MK: To have my own times … I don't think I'd like to work for an employer anymore. Although if it's necessary or if it's financially not going like it should, then I always have to back up because … yeah, why I started my own company is mostly because I could choose a four-year education or just to gain experience for four years. And I think you pay a lot for education so you might as well invest that in starting your own company. If it doesn't work out then it doesn’t work out. If it does, I think you gain more experience by doing that than to go for an education because four years later you gonna be four years older of course, and uh who knows? You might not even be hired by a company like when you have experience in the real world and breakfast … Then uh … I think it's better to gain experience in the real world.
GD: Yeah you were saying that your original plan was to travel every few months, even.
MK: Yeah.
GD: I mean that's something you could do if you're a freelancer.
MK: Yeah exactly I’m location independent, as they call it. Or digital nomad, as they call it. I don’t really like the term.
