After pitching the idea to the University of Montana School of Business and winning a grant to start Danceador, Johanna Ciampa's dream of sharing different dances from around the world became a reality. Johanna Ciampa: Dance is one of those things that transcends borders. My audience comes from all different backgrounds. There’s a huge diversity, and what they all have in common is a love for dance. My name is Johanna Ciampa, I’m from Missoula, Montana. We use GoDaddy for Danceador.com. I always wanted to be a performer, but I didn’t think that I could do it because the world has always made it sounds so complicated to be an artist.
JC: So I ended up becoming a firefighter. I used that money to begin my travels. There are so many different genres of dance, that as I’ve traveled, I’ve gotten to experience, but I can’t find otherwise. As a dancer I would go online and want to find different genres of dance, different ways of moving, and sometimes it was difficult unless you knew exactly what you were looking for. So I wanted to create an interactive and fun way to share and experience and exchange these movement ideas. From that, I came up with the concept of Danceador.
JC: I constantly was facing my own doubts and fears about whether it was a need or a value to others. Part of that was getting to the confidence to be able to pitch my concept to the School of Business at the University of Montana. And, when I won most exciting start-up idea, that’s when I started to realize okay, there are more people that are going to gain from this concept. It’s not just in my imagination.
JC: I think there’s a lot of reasons why it’s important to connect to people across borders, that don’t share a similar background. These connections cause us to have more understanding of each other. If we can see the human in other people, and learn to understand each other and get along. Danceador is about celebrating human expression. There are people who are trying to celebrate who they are, express what their roots are, share their story. Danceador can help.
