Ron Hale opened Cheapskates in Memphis, Tennessee in 1985. Ron Hale: Hi, my name is Ron and I’m the owner of Cheapskates Skateboards in Memphis, Tennessee. I opened the shop in 1985, which makes us the oldest surviving skateboard shop in the state of Tennessee. When I first opened the shop the timing was perfect. Back then, people from California would move to Memphis. So that’s when the whole skating in Memphis started branching out from.
RH: When my brother was running the shop, people would come in and just “oh my God skateboards!” And just freak out, and they would ask my brother a bunch of questions. My brother didn’t know anything about skateboarding. So he’d call me and I’d ask my father “can I go to the shop and help, Rick’s got a bunch of skateboarders in there.” My dad finally got tired of it and he says, “listen boy, you gotta make up your mind, do you wanna work for me, or do you wanna run the skateboard shop?” That decision took about five seconds to make, and that day my brother and I switched jobs.
RH: Back when it was first coming up, yeah it was very busy. The eighties were our boom time. Times have changed I’m afraid. The mom and pop skateboard shops are getting harder and harder to find. They’re dropping out there. And we’re, we’re trying to keep our doors open as long as we can.
RH: I think good customer service has helped a lot in our journey. We kind of always know as much about our product as possible, and we try to teach our customers about what they’re buying. And mostly trying to treat people the way I would want to be treated. When I opened this place in ‘85 I didn’t think I’d be here for 31 years. I thought this would be fun, a fun little experiment. Maybe I could have shut down and done something else, but I don’t think I’d be nearly as happy doing it.
