Derrick Hamilton, owner of Brownstone Bar and Restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, talks about what drove him to open a restaurant. Derrick Hamilton: Well me, I come in different hours. Usually it’s at least 10 o’clock in the morning. And, I don’t leave til 2, 3 a.m. a lot of times. But, there are days man, when I mean, I’m the last guy here. You know, making sure that the spot is spotless clean for the morning crew. I mean making sure there’s no garbage left, making sure that if the health department comes in tomorrow surprisingly when the doors open, we can pass that test.
DH: What drove me to open a restaurant was my partner, Shabaka Shakur, who’s a friend of mine. Um, he was very eager to get into the restaurant business. I mean I kind of referred to working in the mess hall in prison - you know, you work in there all day long feeding 1500 people, and here it’s worse because I mean in there at least, the guys you’re feeding can’t complain about how good the food is.
DH: I spent 21 years in prison for a crime I did not commit. I was exonerated in 2015 by the Brooklyn D.A. office. I got out in 2011 on parole, and since that time I have been working with other wrongfully convicted people, advocate for them. That’s my passion. Shabaka and I shared a common experience, and now we’re together in the restaurant business. It’s amazing for us man, everyday we just thank God that we’re out and that we’re working together.
DH: He’s somebody that I can trust, he’s somebody that I know I can count on. We’re brothers first, and business partners second. Some of the challenges we face at Brownstone is being black in a predominantly white neighborhood, and being stereotyped. The great part about us, we faced it all our life. So, we’re not afraid of racist individuals, and we challenge them. Our motto at Brownstone is you “come in as a stranger, you leave as a friend.” And we live by that.
